Since the democratic revolution of 1990, Mongolia's capital has become one of the fastest-growing cities in Central Asia. Ulaanbaatar now has many surprising opportunities for business growth.
The country's major industries include mining, agriculture and cashmere. China, Russia, the US and Canada are some of Mongolia's major trading partners. Many world famous corporations are doing business in Mongolia and more than 70 countries having already invested in the country. As well as planning to increase its economic trade with neighbouring countries, Mongolia is also keen to boost its tourist industry.
For students who are on a gap-year and looking to get into a related university course, or those looking for employment in a particular sector following graduation, our voluntary business internships in Mongolia offer you an invaluable opportunity to gain work experience that will increase your prospects in a highly competitive job market.
Business work-experience opportunities with Projects Abroad in Mongolia
There are opportunities for those who wish to work within the areas of business administration, management, accountancy, finance, marketing and business consulting. We have placements for you in a wide range of manufacturing companies. Imports account for around 90 per cent of Mongolia's consumer spending and, as a result, trading companies dominate the economy.
If you have an interest in a different area of business please let us know and, provided we have been given enough notice, we will work hard to find a placement to suit your requirements. Please contact us for more information.
Volunteering on a Business Internship Placement in Mongolia
A placement in the business sector could involve you working with a director or general manager of a small or medium-sized company, often handling cross-border contracts with Russian and Chinese clients.
During the placement, interns are expected to be punctual and professional and are required to work normal office hours. When you arrive at work on your first day, you will be assigned a supervisor who will be able to advise and support you during your placement, and of course our Projects Abroad staff are always on hand too, if you should have any questions or problems.
The work you do will depend on the placement, but be prepared for a challenge! You will get involved with the day-to-day activities of the office whether it be contacting different clients, working with business support teams, researching for current or future projects, putting together portfolios, attending meetings or working on set briefs.
For your colleagues, exposure to an English language speaker is highly valuable as it will enable them to advance their own language skills. Work colleagues will often have good levels of English but will be keen to learn more! You might find yourself teaching a few informal bits of English at times or proofreading texts, and you will probably find yourself receiving dinner invitations too!
Whichever business placement you are working on, your input will be greatly encouraged and appreciated. Take the opportunity to make your own suggestions, explain about how things work back home or learn some of the language! Your adaptability and willingness to learn will be greatly appreciated.
"Not only is my placement itself amazing but so are the people I am working with. All Mongolian people are so friendly that I can call my co-workers colleagues and also my best friends. Mongolian people are very hospitable and it is normal that just after you meet someone new, you will be called their friend and that you will be invited to their home for dinner!"
