Our voluntary Medicine programmes in Ghana are based in Cape Coast, in the central region of Ghana. You will be based in a bustling city hospital, working with patients who have a wide range of illnesses.
The hospitals where we work provide an excellent backdrop for learning and improving your medicine and healthcare skills. You will experience different approaches to medicine and treatments. You will find yourself coming into contact with conditions that you wouldn't normally see in Europe and North America, such as malaria and typhoid, on an almost daily basis.
When you first arrive at the hospital you will discuss your work schedule with the Projects Abroad coordinator and the placement supervisor who will be a member of the hospital staff. Most volunteers choose to spend time in a variety of different departments within the hospital, including accident and emergency, paediatrics, maternity, pharmacy, physiotherapy and surgery.
Medical outreach work in Ghana
Volunteers in all regions also take part in regular medical outreach work which involves treating children with minor wounds or illnesses from small villages or paying a visit to an orphanage for example. Volunteers wanting to specialise in the outreach work can join a full time Public Health project based in Dodowa, on the outskirts of Accra. Any volunteers interested in working with HIV and AIDS patients could join our HIV/AIDS control programme based in a hospital in Accra, which also includes community outreach work.
While volunteering in Ghana you will live with local host families. As one of our most popular destinations, there will always be a large Projects Abroad volunteer community present for you to spend time with.
You can join the Medicine project in Ghana for one, two or three weeks if you don't have time to join us for four weeks or more. This project has been selected by our local colleagues as being suitable for short term volunteering for both the host community and the volunteer Although you will gain a valuable cultural insight and work within the local community please be aware that you may not be able to make the same impact as someone volunteering for a longer period.
"In certain departments I felt I benefited the hospital - the ward, laboratory, outpatients - by helping with the workload. In other areas - operating theatres - it was more of a work experience placement where I benefited from the experience I was gaining. Above all, it was great to be able to choose which departments I worked in and for how long."
