By volunteering on our Sports placement in Fiji, you can help to nurture future talent in enthusiastic youngsters in a range of sports. Many sports in Fiji are extremely popular and there are lots of children and young adults wishing to participate, but due to a lack of resources, opportunity is limited.
Through our Sports project young players are given a proper chance to take part. Whatever your skills, with energy and enthusiasm you can coach children the sport you love - or help with a range of games and general fitness sessions.
Teaching Physical Education with Projects Abroad in Fiji
Projects Abroad works with several schools to help develop the physical education programme. Within the schools the children are aged from 6 up to 17 years old and take part in physical education classes throughout the week.
Volunteers are involved with coaching a variety of sports including rugby, football, cricket, basketball and athletics in addition to assisting with planning the sessions with the ultimate goal of improving general fitness, technique and team involvement. Coaching specific sports depends on the time of the year and the sports season for the local primary and secondary school. Coaching may also require spending extra time at the placement in the afternoons.
The children taking part in the sports sessions are often split into small groups and rotated around; as a sports volunteer you therefore need to be prepared to work in small group settings with participants who are different ages and who have different abilities and levels of fitness.
The training sessions are held in the afternoons so many volunteers choose to combine this project with a Care or Teaching project. Please let us know if this is something you would like to do when you apply.
As a sports volunteer, you will be focussing on the Physical Education part of the PEMAC (Physical Education, Music or Arts & Craft) programme. You will work as a Projects Abroad assistant PE teacher and you are encouraged to coach students, in both primary and high school, on the basics of various sports according to the school’s programme.
Your Role Volunteering Abroad on a Sports Project in Fiji
Regardless of the sport you are teaching, you will help to develop student's basic skills and techniques. Once you arrive in Fiji, you will be introduced to the school supervisor to discuss and plan how to best utilise your skills and resources. You will also be involved in coordinating and planning coaching sessions.
You will also be assisting the regular teachers, if needed, in raising awareness for a healthy lifestyle through physical activities. In addition, you will have a chance to develop activities for all age groups to be involved in during the physical education classes.
Participants are usually divided according to age and ability levels and you will find that each student is different and they will greatly benefit from your specialised care and attention to improve their performance; in turn this will benefit the performance of the team as a whole.
Emphasis is also put on enjoyment and participation. Your role, therefore, will be to help make sure the fun and enthusiasm continues. As a foreigner, your presence helps to make each sports session enjoyable - which is vital to maintaining the interest of the participants. Whether you have coaching experience or just a love of sport - you can play a major part in this progressive sporting experience.
You can join the Sports project in Fiji for two or three weeks if you don't have time to join us for four weeks or more. This project has been selected by our local colleagues as being suitable for short term volunteering for both the host schools and the volunteer. Although you will gain a valuable cultural insight and work intensely within the local schools please be aware that you may not be able to make the same impact as someone volunteering for a longer period.
This placement is fully researched, safety audited and risk assessed in accordance with the British Standard BS8848 for the Adventure Travel Sector.
