Our Teaching projects in Ecuador are based in the town of Puerto Baquerizo Moreno on the island of San Cristobal in the Galapagos Islands. There is an increasing demand to learn English amongst Ecuador’s young population, and speaking English is the key to getting a job in the islands’ thriving tourist industry.

By volunteering in Ecuador you will gain invaluable teaching and classroom based work experience. The focus is on conversational English and you will work alongside local staff, so you do not need any formal qualifications or TEFL training.

Your role as an English teacher in Ecuador

Volunteers can choose to teach conversational English at the Projects Abroad English Centre (based in our offices), or they can work as an assistant teacher in a government school. They also have the option to do both. Lessons in the government schools take place in the mornings, while English lessons in the centre take place in the afternoons.Female Projects Abroad volunteer teaching a class to her students

Regardless of which placement you choose, your main focus will be on conversational English, helping to improve the children’s pronunciation.

In most government schools you will begin as a classroom assistant, supporting the teacher during lessons lessons. However, as you get to know the children better and start to grow in confidence you may want to take on more responsibility.

Volunteers with skills or knowledge about teaching other subjects(such as science, maths or IT can assist local teachers with these as well. You can also teach French or German if you have the skills to do so.

During the school holiday in March and April, volunteers can get involved in a camp focused on teaching English, art and sports to local children. Sports lessons may include swimming, basketball and football, but you can also teach any other sport you're skilled or interested in. The children who attend the camp are aged 3 - 11 years old.

You do not need to speak Spanish on this project, but learning a few basics is always helpful. Some volunteers choose to do an add-on or standalone Spanish language classes while they are in Ecuador to improve their language skills.

You can read more detailed information about the aims of the project in our Ecuador Teaching Management Plan.

You can join a Teaching project in Ecuador for two or three weeks if you don't have time to join us for four weeks or more. This project has been selected by our local colleagues as being suitable for short term volunteering for both the host community and the volunteer. Although you will gain a valuable cultural insight and work intensely within the local community please be aware that you may not be able to make the same impact as someone volunteering for a longer period.

This placement is fully researched, safety audited and risk assessed in accordance with the British Standard BS8848 for the Adventure Travel Sector.
