By volunteering on our Multi-sports placement in Ecuador, you can help to nurture future talent in enthusiastic youngsters in a range of sports. Sport in Ecuador is extremely popular and there are many children wishing to participate, but due to a lack of resources, opportunity is limited.

Through our Multi-sports project, young players are given a proper chance to take part. Whatever your skills, with energy and enthusiasm you can coach children the sport you love - or help with a range of games and general fitness sessions.

Coach Sports with Projects Abroad in Ecuador

Projects Abroad works with several community run sports clubs, providing free sports lessons to children, teenagers and adults. Volunteers are usually involved with coaching the younger children and teenagers aged between 8 and 16 years old.

Volunteers are involved with coaching basketball or football in addition to planning the training sessions with the ultimate goal of improving general fitness, technique and team involvement.

Training sessions are held in the afternoons and children are split into smaller groups and rotated around, so as a volunteer you need to be prepared to work with smaller groups of children who all have different abilities and levels of fitness.

Your Role Volunteering Abroad on a Sports Project in Ecuador

Children take part during a sporting activityRegardless of the sport you are teaching, you will help to develop student's basic skills and techniques. Once you arrive in the Galapagos Islands, you will be introduced to the students and your supervisor. You will work with the local teacher to help co-ordinate and plan coaching sessions.

There are typically about 12 students to a group divided by age and ability. You will find that every student is different and they will greatly benefit from your specialised care and attention to improve their performance.

Emphasis is also put on enjoyment and participation; the students attending these sports clubs have a real passion for playing sports. Your role, therefore, will be to help make sure the fun and enthusiasm continues. As a foreigner, your very presence will help to make each training session enjoyable - which is vital to maintaining the interest of the children. Whether you have coaching experience or just a love of sport - you can play a major part in this progressive sporting experience.

There is also the opportunity to teach Zumba and Taekwondo. The Zumba classes are open to both children and adults - adults from the local community really enjoy participating in the sessions run by staff and volunteers. It’s beneficial for volunteers to have basic Zumba skills, but this is not a requirement. In terms of teaching Taekwondo – there is a local Taekwondo instructor who will assist with the sessions, but it would be beneficial if volunteers have some experience or training in this martial art.

The sports coaches do not speak English so you will need to be prepared to learn some basic Spanish before you come. Some volunteers choose to take part in our Spanish language add-on course or standalone intensive course, which is a great way to improve your Spanish language skills.

Because the training sessions are held in the afternoons, many volunteers choose to combine this project with a Care or Teaching project. Please let us know if this is something you would like to do when you apply.

You can join the Multi-sports project in Ecuador for two or three weeks if you don't have time to join us for four weeks or more. This project has been selected by our local colleagues as being suitable for short term volunteering for both the host community and the volunteer. Although you will gain a valuable cultural insight and work intensely within the local community please be aware that you may not be able to make the same impact as someone volunteering for a longer period.

This placement is fully researched, safety audited and risk assessed in accordance with the British Standard BS8848 for the Adventure Travel Sector.
