There is a lack of skilled Occupational Therapists in Vietnam, which has resulted in a lack of access to basic treatment for many local people. Your time as a volunteer Occupational Therapist in Vietnam will be a challenging but rewarding experience and you will be helping many people by improving the quality of their lives through focused therapy.

A Projects Abroad occupational therapy volunteer works with a child at a rehabilitation centre

If you are an enthusiastic student training to become an occupational therapist you’ll provide valuable support to the staff, children and/or adults at rehabilitation centres. All occupational therapy volunteers need to have completed at least one year of related studies.

Occupational therapy volunteers work at a rehabilitation centre, which cares for autistic children, disabled children and adults who suffer from the legacy of the Vietnam War and other causes.

You will work alongside one of the local staff and depending on your experience you may be given groups of children or adults to work with independently. You may even be asked to work with your own individual patients and could spend some time passing on your skills to fellow staff.

Volunteering in Vietnam as an Occupational Therapist

The rehabilitation centres care for disabled children and adults. These centres offer therapeutic and practical help for mentally and physically disabled children as well as providing educational training and medical care. Adults who suffer from the consequences of war also get a variety of help.

Whichever project you join, you’ll go home safe in the knowledge that you’ve made a real and lasting contribution to the placement and the people it serves. This programme is also a chance to improve your CV - gaining practical experience often difficult to get in the west.

The location of your placement will determine what kind of accommodation you will stay in, but you will be able to explore the region with the other volunteers in your time off.

You can read more detailed information about the aims of the project in our Vietnam Medicine & Healthcare Management Plan.

This placement is fully researched, safety audited and risk assessed in accordance with the British Standard BS8848 for the Adventure Travel Sector.

If you have qualifications or experience in this field then we can make use of your skills. Read more about the opportunities for skilled volunteers in Vietnam.
