Volunteering at a pioneering HIV/AIDS programme in Togo is an enlightening and fulfilling experience which will educate you on the current HIV/AIDS status in Africa and the stigma surrounding the disease, while also enabling you to observe and work directly with patients testing positive.

Togo has one of the highest rates of death linked to HIV/AIDS, and, as free treatment is still a recent phenomenon, there is still stigma surrounding the illness. Projects Abroad volunteers are assisting with national efforts to combat HIV, including raising awareness, mounting screenings and providing further support to patients, both medically and psychologically.

Volunteering Abroad to Support HIV/AIDS Patients in Togo

Work with a local NGO

Volunteers will work alongside staff at a local NGO, Jeunes Missionaires d’Aide Humanitaire (JMAH), which was founded with the intent of helping people with HIV/AIDS by focusing on medical and psychological consulting, awareness programmes, prevention, education and training on HIV for children and adults in the area.

The placement is based in central Lomé, close to the border with Ghana. The centre also conducts prevention and social work with vulnerable groups such as immigrants, sex workers, soldiers and long-distance lorry drivers.

Participate in outreach programmes

As a volunteer you will participate in vital outreach programmes and help educate and support HIV/AIDS patients by providing information on ways to manage the virus and develop programmes relating to the economic and social needs of infected people.

What will I gain from this project?

Projects Abroad HIV/AIDS Project volunteers attend an outreach event in Lome, Togo.

  • Invaluable exposure to the treatment of a disease that may be relatively uncommon in your home country
  • A unique insight into the reality of HIV/AIDS in an African country
  • A learning experience and exchange of ideas with local staff
  • Participation in weekly medical outreaches and health check-ups in the local community

This project will often be emotionally demanding, but as a volunteer you will be working toward a worthwhile goal alongside some inspiring people.

No medical experience is necessary to join this project as it combines both medical and care work. The activities you focus on will depend on your level of experience. Any volunteers with a medical background or experience of psychology for example, would be very welcome on this project!
