South Africa is a fantastic destination for older volunteers with an interest in meaningful travel and cultural immersion. Volunteers who join our two week Care & Community in South Africa Grown-up Special are based in Cape Town, where you will travel and work with other volunteers your age. You do not need any experience or special skills to take part. All you need is enthusiasm and a willingness to make a difference.
In Cape Town, you will help out at an underprivileged school and work with children aged 7-13. Along with your fellow volunteers, you will teach a variety of classes including IT. Here, you will be able to contribute to the students’ educational development and teach them valuable life skills, sharing stories about life in your home country.
In the afternoons, you will be able to make a lasting contribution to the school by painting a classroom and participating in other maintenance activities. This is a great way for volunteers to improve the overall learning environment for these students.
During your time abroad, you will live with a host family, which allows you to become fully immersed in the local way of life. Evenings are set aside for cultural or leisure activities organised by Projects Abroad staff, including visits to Table Mountain, Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens, and the historic Robben Island. On the weekend, we will arrange a trip to the famous Garden Route that will allow you to fully experience the beauty of South Africa and enjoy the breath-taking natural environment.
This placement is fully researched, safety audited and risk assessed in accordance with the British Standard BS8848 for the Adventure Travel Sector.
