A male volunteer working with children on a placement in the Philippines

Volunteering on our Occupational Therapy placement in the Philippines will give you excellent international work experience, which will be a great addition to your CV and allow you to acquire new skills and expertise. Occupational Therapists are also in great demand here - according to the 2010 Census of Population and Housing in the Philippines, there are 1.44 million people struggling with a disability in the Philippines.

It is also estimated that one in 20 households have at least one family member with a disability, and half of them are not able to attend or finish primary school. While many do experience lifelong disabilities, others are able to overcome their mobility problems with appropriate therapy. Your skills will be invaluable in making a tangible different in the lives of these locals.

Poor families, especially those in the north of the province, are unable to afford special therapy sessions because of their high costs and/or lack of nearby facilities. A child with a disability needs at least two to three treatment sessions per week, and this does not take into account other medical needs required for their full rehabilitation.

In order to volunteer on this placement, you need to have completed at least six months to one year of occupational therapy studies or related training.

Occupational Therapy Placements in the Philippines

As a volunteer, you will be based at the Persons with Disability Affairs (PDAO) centre in San Remigio, Cebu. Volunteers will work with disabled patients during house-to-house visits as well as gatherings in various community centres. You will be supervised by the director of the PDAO, who is also disabled.

Although results are not immediate, it can be a rewarding experience for the volunteer to see the gradual improvements in their patients.

Working hours are from 8:30am until 11am and then again from 1:30pm until 4pm. During your placement, you will live with a host family, who will share their home and their culture with you. There are also plenty of local attractions to explore during your time off, including beaches, markets and island surrounds.

You can read more detailed information about the aims of the project in our Philippines Medicine & Healthcare Management Plan.
