Volunteering on a Care project in Laos with Projects Abroad

A group of local children playing together in the Laos sunshineVolunteering on this Care project in Laos will be a challenging but also rewarding experience. Volunteers are needed to help in disadvantaged and under-resourced care centres and kindergarten placements in the capital city, Vientiane.

Poverty affects a large number of Lao children. As a result, they are often malnourished and have little or no access to healthcare and the education they need. Therefore, the main goal of our Care project is to support early childhood development.

All Care volunteers in Laos are supervised by local staff. You will assist these staff members and focus on teaching basic life skills. Together, you’ll provide essential care while monitoring individual child development.

Your role on the Care project

Your role at your Care placement will be a varied one. Every task you participate in, even those on a basic level, will help make a difference. This could range from feeding the younger children to teaching personal hygiene.

Your daily tasks may involve reading to the children and working individually with local staff to build their English capacity. In addition to your work at the placement, you may also have the chance to work directly in the communities helping to raise awareness of children’s rights.

Your presence alone also makes a significant impact. Friendship and support are some of the key things you can offer while on this placement. Whether you are helping children with educational activities or teaching them a new game, the time and attention you give to them is invaluable.

Working hours and resources

Working hours will depend on the placement and individual schedules. Most volunteers work from Monday to Friday and have the weekends free to travel.

Projects Abroad is happy to provide extra help and resources for Care volunteers. This may include buying arts and craft materials or arranging a day where all the volunteers help to renovate a play area at one of the kindergartens or care centres. If you have any ideas, please let our local staff know.

Short-term placements

You can join the Care project in Laos for two or three weeks if you don't have time to join us for four weeks or more. This project has been selected by our local colleagues as being suitable for short term volunteering for both the host community and the volunteer.

Although you will gain a valuable cultural insight and work intensely within the local community please be aware that you may not be able to make the same impact as someone volunteering for a longer period.

This placement is fully researched, safety audited and risk assessed in accordance with the British Standard BS8848 for the Adventure Travel Sector.
