Volunteering in Laos with Projects Abroad
As the official tourism slogan suggests, Laos is ‘Simply Beautiful’. It has a peaceful Buddhist culture, historical French colonial architecture, wild silk, and two UNESCO World Heritage sites. However, Laos is also an extremely underprivileged nation, with a third of the population living on less than 82p per day, and volunteer assistance is crucial for uplifting disadvantaged communities.
Where we are based in Laos
Projects Abroad is based in the capital in city of Vientiane, which is also Laos’ economic centre. Located on the bank of the Mekong River (separating it from Thailand), Vientiane offers warm weather throughout the year. Volunteers will live in guest houses or apartments in this small city, which is home to many temples and Buddhist monuments. This includes the well-known Pha That Luang and Wat Si Muang.
Travel and tourism in Laos
Volunteers living and working in the laid-back city of Vientiane will have plenty of opportunity to explore the stunning landscape around them. You can travel over the weekends or after completing your placement. The cost of living in Laos is also extremely affordable.
Some of the top places to travel include Luang Prabang and Wat Phu, the ruined Khmer Hindu temple. There is also the Plain of Jars, which is an archaeological landscape that has thousands of stone jars. Laos New Year is celebrated in April and locals and tourists enjoy a water festival, which is popular in many Asian countries.
Alternatively, volunteers may enjoy the simplicity of Laos by visiting some of the many fresh produce markets or taking a walk along the Mekong.
