Projects Abroad in Brazil – Arrival Procedures

Brazil, Projects Abroad in Brazil - Volunteer with host mother

Volunteers fly into Rio de Janeiro Galeao International airport. You will be met by a Projects Abroad member of staff who will take you directly to meet your host family across the bay in Niteroi.

Our host-families are extremely friendly and eager to learn all about our volunteers. They are middle class families, living in good accommodation around the edge of Niteroi. A typical welcome at your accommodation will involve sitting down with the family for a big meal and a chance to get to know everyone. You will then have the chance to rest and relax for the remainder of the day.

Volunteering in Brazil – Induction and Orientation

Brazil, Projects Abroad in Brazil - View of Rio

The following day, a member of Projects Abroad staff will collect you from your accommodation and give you an induction around Niteroi. This will include being taken to the Projects Abroad office where you’ll receive a welcome pack and getting to know the area you’re living in. You’ll be shown internet cafés, banks and the post office.

All volunteers are provided with a map of the local area and contact details of other volunteers living nearby. The following day you will be taken to your placement and be introduced to your supervisor. Most volunteers take a local bus to get to work, and you’ll be shown where to catch it and where to get off.

You will receive a warm welcome from our local staff as well as the Brazilians you will meet on the street. Although most of the local people will not speak much English, you will find that they are keen to get to know you. This is a great way to practice your Portuguese as well as making some new friends.
