Animal Care in Argentina

The Animal Care Project in Argentina is very much a practical placement for people who love animals. Whether you are a pre-university student considering a career in veterinary medicine, a student, a graduate, or simply a passionate animal lover, you can get involved in our Animal Care Project in Argentina.

Animal Care volunteers work at an animal sanctuary in Villa Rumipal, just over 100km away from Cordoba. The sanctuary focuses on the care of a variety of animals that have been brought to the centre because of injuries or elimination of their natural habitat.

Animal Care in Argentina

The animal sanctuary is home to a wide range of animals, including pumas, howler monkeys, llamas, guanacos and many other animals. You will feed and care for the animals and observe how the animals are treated, sometimes having the chance to observe the local staff during an operation, or when checking some of the wilder animals. The amount of hands-on work allocated will depend on your individual level of knowledge and experience.

Volunteers also assist with building enclosures for the animals and general maintenance work on the facilities and trails in the area.

Volunteers can also help by writing blogs and recording the details of each animal, including any treatments they need and their age.

A large reforestation project is also taking place in the area and volunteers help with this by planting seeds and working in the greenhouse.

Speaking at least some basic Spanish is recommended and the more you speak the more you will be able to get involved. You will live in a hostel based at the Animal Care placement.

On your first day you will be introduced to the placement supervisors and the member of staff you will be working with. Working hours are 8 – 5 in the winter and 9 – 6 in the summer, with a break in the middle of the day for lunch. You’ll get two days off each week, however, the days off will not be on the weekends, as that is when your work is most needed.

You can join the Animal Care in Argentina for two or three weeks if you don't have time to join us for four weeks or more. This project has been selected by our local colleagues as being suitable for short term volunteering for both the host community and the volunteer. Although you will gain a valuable cultural insight and work intensely within the local community please be aware that you may not be able to make the same impact as someone volunteering for a longer period.

This placement is fully researched, safety audited and risk assessed in accordance with the British Standard BS8848 for the Adventure Travel Sector.
