Volunteer Sport Coaching in Schools in India with Projects Abroad

Volunteer Coaching Overseas: School Sports in India

Sports, School Sports in India

Ask anyone who has been to an Indian cricket match and you will be left in no doubt that the nation is passionate about sport. In common with much of Asia, India receives major European sporting events via satellite television and the different time zones mean that a leisurely afternoon fixture in the UK makes for a lively evening one over there, with more people gathered around fewer televisions. Watching sport in India is an incredibly social event.

But due to a lack of resources you will find that sport isn't played to anything like the same degree that it is in the West. Schools do not have the facilities or the equipment, and even if they did, they could not afford the staff to provide students with the grounding and further tuition to develop sporting ability. By working with Projects Abroad as a volunteer Sports Coach, you can help to put this right.

Sports, School Sports in India - Cricket Team

There are sports placements where you can help coach volleyball - a sport rapidly growing in popularity in India - basketball, tennis, athletics and football, as well as the established Indian favourites of tennicoit, badminton and, of course, cricket.

Depending on your stage of life you can volunteer as a Sports Coach as part of a gap year, during a career break or as part of an alternative holiday; everybody is very welcome! And you do not have to have previous experience. Anyone with a general love of sport can participate.

Volunteering Abroad on Sports Projects in India

The main effort of the volunteers at this school sport placement is to assist teachers from the school with all sporting activities. Volunteer Coaches can get involved in as many sports as they wish or focus solely on their favourite. Tasks can be anything from setting up volleyball courts, taking fitness sessions for athletics, coaching football at training, practicing racket swings in badminton and educating children on sporting principles.

Most children - boys and girls - seem to have great enthusiasm and an unlimited appetite for sport, especially when it is made accessible and fun. Before long you will begin to see improvements in their general health and fitness, as well as their confidence and general level of happiness. You may even set some individuals off down a path to sporting greatness! If you have the time and energy to help, there are many children, parents and schools who would be extremely grateful for your efforts.

You can join a school sports project in India for two weeks if you don't have time to join us for a month or more. This project has been selected by our local colleagues as being suitable for short term volunteering for both the host community and the volunteer. Although you will gain a valuable cultural insight and work intensely within the local community please be aware that you may not be able to make the same impact as someone volunteering for a longer period. Volunteers who can only join us for two weeks may be paired up with another longer term sports volunteer.
