French Language Classes Overseas with Projects Abroad

Take the opportunity to immerse yourself in the French language and fascinating Franco-African culture on one of our intensive French language placements in Morocco, Senegal or Togo.
With 60 hours of tuition per month and accommodation with a local family, you'll learn quickly and can practise what you've learnt with your hosts each day.
Whether you are a complete beginner or have been learning French for many years, being immersed in the language every day will help your skills progress quickly. After your lessons you will, of course, have plenty of time to complete your homework and explore the area with other volunteers.
Alternatively you can undertake a short, 14-hour language course in French. These courses are tailored to your needs and run alongside your volunteer placement. If you are planning on volunteering abroad for three months or more, you could also complete a 60-hour course alongside your placement. For more information please visit our Volunteer foreign language courses.
French Language Project in Senegal

French is the main language of communication on a daily basis in Senegal, although for most Senegalese people in Saint Louis their mother tongue is the tribal language of Wolof. But to buy items in a shop, chat with your placement supervisor or joke with your host family you will need to speak some French.
If you are not confident in starting a placement before improving your French, a month-long intensive language course is a sensible and worthwhile plan. We provide 60 hours of one-to-one tuition with fully qualified French language teachers. During your first lesson your teacher will assess your ability, and from then on the classes will be tailored to your level.
To supplement your studies you will live with a local host family, where you can put your new vocabulary into practice. Once you have completed a month's study, you could go on to spend some time on a Teaching, Care or Sports project. If your French is good enough, you could also work on one of our Radio Journalism placements.
French Language Project in Morocco

Rabat provides a cosmopolitan setting in which to improve your French. Although Arabic is the official language in Morocco, Rabat's focus on politics and business means that French is culturally very important here and if you don't know much Arabic, will be the main language that you can use to communicate.
You will receive 60 hours of tuition per month and be accommodated with a French-speaking local family. Using the language every day and with plenty of access to Francophone culture through libraries, cinemas and music, your skills will rapidly improve. Depending on when you arrive in Morocco you may take the course alone or with two or three other volunteers at the same level as you.
After your month long French Language course, you could choose to spend time working on a Teaching or Care project in Morocco, giving you more opportunities to practise and improve your language skills.
French Language Project in Togo

Although Togo gained independence from France in 1960, French still remains the official language of this West African nation. Numerous tribal languages are spoken throughout the country with Eve being the main language used in Lomé alongside French.
French will be your main language of communication with the Togolese people. As you are interacting with locals while volunteering on any project in Togo, having some basic French is essential. If you feel your French needs to improve before you start a Teaching or Care project, a two week or month long intensive French course is a good option.
You will receive 15 hours of one-to-one tuition per week with a qualified teacher. After your class is over for the day, you will have plenty of time to practice your French conversation skills with your local host family. Lomé is also home to a lively French Cultural Center, which shows francophone films and hosts regular live music events.
