Care volunteers in Ghana have been giving a much needed facelift to New Life Orphanage in Nungua, just outside of Accra. New Life is home to 23 children as well as a number who attend before and after school care. Despite the fact that the centre was painted less than two years ago, the walls of the courtyard, hallways, and children’s bedrooms were faded, chipped, and dirty. Three Care volunteers enlisted the help of a further three Sports volunteers and the team worked hard to give New Life the attention it deserved. The team spent hours on the first day of work toiling in the midday heat in order to finish the courtyard walls before the children returned from school. The fresh coat of paint, complete with vibrant Ghanaian flag mural, immediately impressed a number of the children. The six volunteers spent every morning for a week working on the project before continuing with the normal day-to-day activities of their projects in the afternoons.
When not renovating and painting at New Life, Care volunteers get involved in activities which help with the day-to-day running of the centre and find as many ways as possible to keep the children busy. Here we take a look at a typical Care volunteer’s day in Ghana: | | 7:30a.m. | | Wake up and have breakfast with my host family - usually eggs, bread and jam, and fruit
| | | | 8:30a.m. to 12p.m. | | Because the children are at school in the morning, I start my placement in the afternoon. I use the morning to buy supplies, work on preparing activities for the children and sometimes participate in medical outreach projects with some of our Medical volunteers.
| | | | 1p.m. | | Lunch at home, usually rice with some sort of sauce, and fruit for pudding.
| | | | 2p.m. | | Public transit trip to work – line taxi and tro tro ride to New Life.
| | | | 3p.m. | | Arrive at work, greet the children who arrive back from school and help them to change out of their uniforms.
| | | | 3:30p.m. to 4:30p.m.
| | Help the children with their homework.
| | | | 4:30p.m. to 6:00p.m. | | Activities with the children. This can include colouring and drawing, reading, arts and crafts, playing football and other sports and games.
| | | | 7:00p.m. | | Dinner at home with housemates - often chicken, rice and sauce, coleslaw or pasta and more fresh fruit.
| | | | 8:00p.m. onwards | | Depending on the night, maybe reading or spending time with the host family, meeting up with other Projects Abroad staff and volunteers, quiz night or going for a drink at the beach.

Weekends are usually spent exploring Accra, relaxing at the beach or visiting nearby regions such as Cape Coast and Volta – a much-needed break after a week of hard work! |
