Top Travel Songs

Whenever I hear Bob Marley’s Buffalo Soldier, I am suddenly transported back to a holiday I took in Thailand a couple of years ago. A small bar, no more than a shack really, a Chang in hand and the gentle swaying of a hammock. No other song could sum it up better.

Music really can capture a special moment, so we asked our Facebook followers to come up with their top travel songs in order to create the perfect soundtrack to complement our best travel pictures.

Track 1 – Lac Noirs

Lac Noirs in Chamonix

This picture was snapped 2500 metres above sea level at Lac Noirs in the Aiguilles Rouges massif, north of Chamonix. To get there you need to hike for about 2 hours from Plan Praz or Index chairlifts, and be confident scrambling over boulders and traversing sections of vertical cliffs.

Fiona Kelly suggested ‘Sitting on the Dock of the Bay’ by Otis Redding as the perfect soundtrack to compliment this view.

Track 2 – Sossusvlei

Climbing a dune in Namibia

Thank you to Kaoutar Hrari for suggesting ‘Soul of Morocco’ by Oum Taragalte as the perfect soundtrack to a hike up this dune.

However, this photo was actually taken in Sossusvlei National Park in Namibia, Southern Africa. This region is characterised by the vivid red dunes, some of which are among the tallest in the world.

Track 3 – Bariloche

Cycling in Bariloche

This is the fantastic view that greets cyclists riding around the Circuito Chico circuit in Bariloche, in the Argentinean Lake District. Bariloche is a chocolate box town on the banks of the Nahuel Huapi Lake, surrounded by snow-capped mountains, pine forests and excellent cycle trails.

Ellie Fountain decided that ‘On Top of the World’ by Imagine Dragons would be her song choice if she’d cycled for hours and come across this view.

Track 4 – Playa Santa Teresa

Sunset surfing in Costa Rica

Playa Santa Teresa on Costa Rica’s Nicoya Peninsular provided the stunning backdrop for this sunset snap. It’s a haven for surfers due to its high swells and various point breaks. It’s also a pretty good spot to capture the perfect sunset photo.

Thank you to Kieran Maartens who said that he’d most likely be listening to ‘Let’s Go Surfing’ by The Drums if he were about to hit the surf.

Track 5 – Laguna Torre

Chilling amongst the glaciers

This photo was taken at Laguna Torre in El Chalten National Park. Located in Southern Patagonia, El Chalten is a wilderness wonderland, complete with glacial rivers, towering peaks, icebergs and temperamental weather.

I particularly liked the soundtrack provided by Bethany Evans, who said she would most likely be listening to ‘Ice Ice Baby’ by Vanilla Ice if she were chilling amongst the glaciers in Patagonia.

Track 6 – San Pedro de Atacama

Sunset in San Pedro

This sunset silhouette was captured in San Pedro de Atacama, Northern Chile. One of the driest places on the planet – some parts of this lonely landscape have never seen rainfall. It’s also one of the best places in the world to carry out astronomical observations, owing to its high altitude and lack of light pollution.

Chris D thought that ‘Beautiful World’ by Coldplay would be the perfect song to listen to whilst watching the sun set over the Atacama.

Track 7 – Machu Picchu

View of Machu Picchu

After hiking the four day Inca Trail through Peru’s Andean mountain range, tired trekkers are treated to this magnificent view of the Incan citadel of Machu Picchu. This - one of the Seven Wonders of the World - really is a sight for sore eyes.

Vivienne Eyre said she would most probably be listening to the Muse cover of ‘Feeling Good’ after hiking to Machu Picchu.

Track 8 – Little Langdale

Little Langdale in the Lake District

Taken in the beautiful valley of Little Langdale in the Lake District National Park, this photo proves that England does indeed have views to rival even the most exotic of destinations. Even the local livestock can’t help but admire the view.

I very much liked Charlie Illingsworth’s suggestion of hiking along to the sound of ‘Send Me on My Way’ by Rusted Root.

So there you have it – our top travel songs and the soundtrack to your travels. You can listen to the whole play list below. Now all you have to do is decide where to go!
