20,000th Gap year volunteer joins Projects Abroad

Seventeen year old Manon Oliver from Esher is the 20,000th volunteer to join Projects Abroad. Manon and her brother, both from ACS Cobham International School have joined a two week medical project in India this summer. Last week she was called by Dr Peter Slowe, Director of Projects Abroad to tell her of the significance of her application.

Dr Slowe met up with Manon at the ACS Cobham International School with Recruitment Director, Ian Birbeck, to present her with a certificate and camera. Ian was one of Projects Abroad's first twenty volunteers joining a teaching programme in Moldova back in 1992. He said "It is amazing to think that since I first joined Projects Abroad almost a football stadium's worth of other volunteers have joined our programmes. There were 15 of us teaching in local schools. I had a great time and have been involved with Projects Abroad ever since."

Manon heard about Projects Abroad through seventeen year old, Kristina Johansson (from the same school) who went away with Projects Abroad on a care project working in an orphanage in Ghana last summer. She came back and did a presentation to the school to help fundraise for the orphanage she worked in. She is going back this summer to help out.

Dr Peter Slowe said "I started this programme as a geography lecturer aiming to send away some of my students to Eastern Europe. Sixteen years later we send away volunteers at the rate of 4,000 a year to twenty three destinations on four continents. The projects are worthwhile, adventurous and enjoyable. We now employ over 250 staff around the world to give secure back-up to every volunteer.

"I am sure Manon will have a great time in India. It is where I spent my gap year and met our Indian Director, Chinnasamy Rajendran, as a young teacher."
