A 72-year-old grandmother is heading to the Philippines to help survivors cope with the aftermath of Typhoon Haiyan. Pontypool mother-of-three Brenda Manley will travel to the city of Cebu on January 9 to help re-open schools and care for children after Typhoon Haiyan destroyed buildings and killed thousands last month.

About 440 vulnerable children from four deprived communities in the Amansie West District of the Ashanti Region have benefited from free registration of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS). Projects Abroad, an NGO working to restore dignity to vulnerable children by providing them medical care and education, gave the underprivileged children the chance to access health care free of charge.

The Projects Abroad organisation has been making a difference in the lives of people in Jamaica and other developing countries across the world. The volunteer-based organisation was founded in 1992 by geography professor Dr Peter Slowe in the United Kingdom. Slowe, after taking a group of his students to Romania to do voluntary work, saw the need for people from developed countries to volunteer their service in developing countries.

Michelle Howell, 22, of Upabon Garth, Noddle Hill Way, has signed up with Projects Abroad, a company that runs volunteering projects in more than 25 countries. The University of Hull graduate jets off to Kenya on April 6 to teach English and drama to primary school children in the country.
