I’m almost at the end of a three month sabbatical during which I have travelled in Peru and Bolivia, taught music in Cochabamba (Bolivia) and explored the enchanting sounds and rhythms of Andean music. I decided that the most effective way of submerging myself into a musical community was to volunteer as a music teacher. The music volunteer project run by the organisation Projects Abroad seemed an ideal option.

The fact that it is World Aids Day today may not make much of an impact on most people in the UK, where HIV is “yesterday’s news” – however the world’s largest volunteering organisation, Projects Abroad, has used the occasion to offer Britons the chance to take a break in Jamaica to help out at a new facility for orphans living with HIV/Aids.
November 2011Volunteer Profile - Alexa Anderson
Alexa Anderson started volunteering at just 16 as part of her Duke of Edinburgh Award. After finishing school, and before embarking on university life, she planned a gap year with Projects Abroad. A conservation project in Mozambique, followed by a stint in Mexico later and she had caught the volunteer bug. Alexa continued to work with Projects Abroad in various forms, until earlier this year but now the 25-year-old graduate works for Macmillan Cancer Support as a fundraising assistant and volunteers with two grassroots charities.

Blue School student Natalie Cox was recently awarded a grant of £300 from City of Wells Lions Club. Natalie, who is in the second year of her A-levels, is raising funds for a trip to Madurai in southern India which she hopes to take in early summer 2012. Natalie plans to study midwifery at university and will be volunteering with Projects Abroad at a maternity clinic in Madurai.

Proposals to change the university admissions process have received a mixed reaction from education experts. Admissions service UCAS has published a consultation document on changing the system to allow students to apply to higher education after they have received their A-level results.

It is a rite of passage in which school leavers take a breather and broaden their horizons before starting university. Now the traditional gap year, which can last a year or more, appears to be giving way to a new phenomenon: the snap year. Gap year organisers have reported a sharp rise in this truncated break, with young people forced to restrict themselves to just a couple of months off after finishing school.

Learning English can be made interesting. Grammar classes interspersed with trivia about South Africa and Zimbabwe's culture and geography were indeed a different kind of experience for the students of Velliveethiyar Corporation Girls Higher Secondary School, Madurai.
As part of a tie-up with Projects Abroad programme, the school students were taught the nuances of the English language, grammar and conversation skills by student volunteers from abroad.

Projects Aboard add new volunteer projects
Gap-year students or career-break travellers looking for a different type of adventure should consider an overseas volunteer work placement, as Projects Aboard has just added two new destinations to its growing portfolio. Projects Aboard now offer volunteering opportunities in 27 different countries across the globe, and recently added teaching, care and conservation placements in the town of Baños, in Ecuador and care and teaching projects in the Javanese city of Yogyakarta in Indonesia.

Gap-year companies are experiencing a drop in the number of school-leavers applying for places, as increased tuition fees next year makes it more prudent for them to go to university. Many are opting to forgo the chance of spending a carefree year abroad in favour of beating the fees rises of up to £9,000 a year, which come into effect in September 2012. However, the effect on gap-year companies is likely to be mitigated by an influx of older graduates, who have searched for jobs in vain and are now turning to volunteering to boost their CVs.
